Women's Health Week

Across Australia, Women’s Health Week is an annual reminder for women to take care of their mental, physical, and emotional health. This year the week runs from 3rd September to 7th September, and each day celebrates a different theme.

At Sydney Allied Health Group, our physiotherapists have chosen to celebrate Pelvic Power in our clinic during the entire month of September. The pelvis is a region present in both males, and females which houses the reproductive and urinary organs. This region is found to be larger in women as they require more space for childbirth. One of the most common ailments relating to the pelvic region are pelvic floor disorders.

Pelvic Floor Disorders

The pelvic floor refers to a group of muscles found in the pelvis region which provide support to the organs in this area. A pelvic floor disorder is when the individual is unable to control the muscles in the pelvis region, which leads to problems with urination, bowel movement, and sexual intercourse (for women).

The most common problem associated with pelvic floor disorders is urinary incontinence which can be cause through pregnancy, childbirth and menopause.

There are many symptoms associated with pelvic floor disorders (including painful urination, lower back pain, and constipation among others). However, it is not possible to pinpoint the exact cause of this disorder.

One of the most effective ways to improve this condition is to perform a series of exercises. We are proud to have a physiotherapist who has a special interest in Women’s Health and Pelvic Floor Disorders, Clarissa Yiu. While tending to Physiotherapy clients, Clarissa also conducts Clinical Pilates sessions, and a ‘Lungs in Action’ class. If you believe that you are experiencing these symptoms or are interested in any of her classes, book in with her today by calling 1300 16 16 88.
