Are you finding it increasingly harder to stack the top shelf at home or place the star on top of the Christmas tree at the end of each year?
From lifting boxes to gardening and carrying shopping bags, the shoulders play a key role in everyday tasks. Unfortunately, all that movement can come at a cost.
Shoulder pain is a common complaint, especially during the holiday season. Poor posture, repetitive movements, and lifting heavy items can lead to discomfort, stiffness, and even injury. This kind of pain can limit mobility, interrupt sleep, and prevent you from enjoying the activities you love most, just when you want to be feeling your best.
Common Shoulder Injuries:
Bursitis: inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the shoulder joint. It often results from repetitive overhead movements or prolonged pressure on the shoulder, leading to pain and swelling.
Rotator cuff tears: One or more of the tendons in the rotator cuff become overstretched or torn. This can happen gradually due to overuse or suddenly from lifting heavy objects. Symptoms include weakness, limited range of motion, and sharp pain.
Tendinitis: inflammation of the tendons surrounding the shoulder, is common in people performing repetitive activities and can cause aching and stiffness.
Shoulder impingement happens when shoulder tendons are compressed during movement, leading to pain and reduced mobility.
Recognising these issues early and addressing them with the help of a physiotherapist can prevent further damage and promote recovery.
The Good News? You Can Prevent Most Shoulder Issues
The majority of shoulder injuries can be prevented or effectively managed with the right approach. Simple strategies such as improving posture, modifying movement patterns, and strengthening key muscle groups can make a significant difference.
This December, we are encouraging a proactive focus on shoulder health and mobility. Your physiotherapist and exercise physiologist can help individuals:
